Composer & Inventor

Tod Machover is an Emmy-Award composer, inventor of hyperinstruments and hyperscore software, and promoter of music AI. He is a professor at the MIT Media Lab where he also heads Media Lab’s Opera of the Future group. Tod’s work explores new technologies for musical expression, including inventing new musical instruments and developing interactive musical systems.

As part of its investigation into creativity and the use of materials, Confluence commissioned Tod, materials scientist Zoe Laughlin, and glass fabricator Michael Stern to design and build a series of glass cymbals, which were used to perform the composition The Edge of Every Thing.
